How to Write a Short Story

Everybody knows writing a story is not easy. Like the drama or the poem, it is imaginative literature that should appeal to the emotions of the readers. Since it communicates the writer's interpretation of reality, there must be an artistic use of language to signify human experience. But how do we write a great short story? What are the things to keep in mind in order to come up with a short story that works? Here's a quick guide to get you started:

1. Read

Reading is essential to anyone who wants to write. In order to be able to write a good short story, you must read other short stories first. This will not only give you the motivation and inspiration for your own story, but it will also help you learn how other authors made an impression on the reader and use their style as basis to create your own style and impression.

2. Get inspired

For seasoned professionals, there is no need to obtain inspiration because thoughts naturally flow and they only have to put them into words on paper. But for novice writers, it is important to have one because it will not only help you begin your first paragraph but also keep you going throughout. Your inspiration may take the form of an object. a person, or an event that you just can't seem to forget.

3. Conceptualize your story

Think of something you want to talk about with your readers. Let's say you want to relate a story about a couple who fell in love with each other. What about the couple? What is it about them that you are interested to let your readers know? Focus on this idea and think of other concepts that you want to associate with this couple. Suppose the girl's parents discommended their relationship. What about the parents? What did they do to stop the two from loving each other? This could signal a good beginning for your story. From here, you would have the notion what to write down.

4. Map out the scenes

In order to keep your writing aligned with your pre-conceived story events, it is good to briefly map out scenes of your story on a different piece of paper. Write down the possible characters of your story and list the main events in order. You don't have to put so much detail on them because this only serves as a rough sketch of how your story will look like.

5. Chooose your point of view

Who tells the story and how it is told is very critical for a short story to be effective. The point of view can change the feel and tone of the story radically. Hence, you must decide carefully before finally resolving with the angle of vision to use for your story. But whatever it is you decide to choose as the point of view, make sure it stays constant throughout your story to maintain consistency.

6. Conceive your characters

For a short story, create a maximum of only three main characters. Too many main characters will make your story confusing since each new character will provide a new dimension for the story. Each character should be more than cardboard caricatures. Make your characters speak naturally in proportion with their traits. Make them believable but mysterious.

7. Furnish a good introduction

When you have everything planned out, start scribbling your first paragraph. Introduce your main characters and set out the scene. The scene must be some place you know much about so that you'd be able to supply the necessary snapshot for a clearly described setting. Make your introduction interesting to hold the reader’s interest and encourage them to read on to the end. It is also important to hold back significant details and the greater part of the action at this point so the mystery is kept.

8. Build up a great plot

From your introduction, draw out events that will eventually create a problem or a conflict for the main character/characters. After that, begin laying out an array of clues to keep the reader interested, intrigued and guessing. Intensify the conflict as the story moves forward. This will not only make your reader enthused to read more but will also keep them riveted to your story.

9. Show don't tell

The characters should be the ones responsible for expressing the story through their actions and dialogue and not the writer telling the reader what is being expressed. Rather than saying, "Annette was really mad at her bestfriend Christina for stealing her boyfriend", say "Annette felt an ache in her stomach and a strong pang of betrayal as Christina approaches her and flashes her with a sweet smile. She breathed hard trying to calm herself as she speaks with suppressed anger: "I hope you're happy now that you've proven yourself as a friend."

10. Use active verbs

Put as much life into your story as you can. In order to do this, employ verbs in the active voice in your story. Instead of saying,"The flower was picked by Johanna", say "Johanna picked the flower."

11. Use some dialogue

Dialogue is important in bringing your story to life. Don't just use it to pad out your characters. Use it to convey your characters to identify with the reader. Use it in direct quotes like "Go there!" instead of indirect quotes as "She told him to go there."

12. Keep references handy

A good reference such as a thesaurus or a dictionary is crucial in creating a good story. You can use them to check your spellings and to find the words which best fit your description. Instead of using one lengthy sentence or paragraph, you can utilize one or just a few words to convey what you want to say. Oftentimes, one strong word has a greater effect than a paragraph full of fancy language.

13. Conclude briefly

Conclusions are tough sledding. For a good ending, it is advisable to experiment and to add a little twist. Make your ending unique but not hanging in a loose end. Make it satisfying without making it too predictable. Keep in mind to keep it short but concise and lingering so that the reader is left with a feeling of resonance. Your conclusion should wrap up everything from start to finish.

14. Edit and revise

After fashioning the last words of your story, it is time to begin the editing cycle. Carefully go through your work and fix all your mistakes regarding sentence construction, word usage, formatting. punctuation marks, diction, spelling, grammar, and descriptive analysis. Scratch out words, phrases and even paragraphs which don't seem to contribute to the basic elements of the story. After you're done, let it sit for a while for days and even weeks, then edit it again. Reread your story over and over again at different occasions. This will make you see various things you may want to change to make your story shine at its best.

15. Let others proof read

Have your friends take a look at your work. They may just be able to see mistakes which you have missed. For instance, they may be distracted with some words or lines which you adore dearly. In this case, you have to decide on changing it or cutting it off completely.

Writing a short story may not be easy but it can surely be done. With some knowledge on the basic elements and some passion and patience, it's effortless to pull together a story with just a few ideas. Just keep in mind that you're writing not because you have to, but because you want to. Give it a go now!

How To Find Your Center Of Power

The still place is the beginning. Settle in there, ask for order, and an inner force will prioritize all that you need.

Action can be inner or outer, depending on how Spirit wants you to move.

It's never about doing something or resolving something. It's always about being.

When you settle into your beingness, you also release want and scarcity. The way will then be made plain to you. But it will happen in degrees. You will be shown one step at a time.

Your losses are in the past. They are miscreations that you can set behind you.

All fear, all doubt, and all anxiety are misperceptions based on avoiding the center of your life, your beingness.

You will prosper when your mind is controlled by your soul, but not before then. When the mind runs you, then you can only expect the past to roll over into the future. When you, as soul, control the mind, then you can call upon all the forces of creation to assist you.

It is difficult to adopt this thinking because it is foreign to us. Yet the world is not really material. It is a spiritual game. If you want to win the game of life, you have to play it as a spiritual warrior and not a victimized human being with a paucity of power.

Anything is possible at any time for anyone regardless of their condition. To change conditions, you must change your mind about what things mean to you. You must discriminate between what you personally value and those values that have been foisted upon you by the opinions of others.

All is well when you allow it to be. Disaster belongs only to those who choose to remain uncentered. And, of course, all centering comes from return to your acceptance of yourself as a spiritual power without limitation.

Limitations arise from your thoughts. Once you release limiting thoughts, once you upgrade your consciousness, then miracles unfold with spontaneous ease.

In the final analysis, it's all about being who you really are inside. Once you make that connection, things on the outside fall into place.

When you feel good about yourself, you'll know you're getting close to the truth.

At some point in our lives, our attachment to mishap must cease if we are to birth hope, promise, and a life of service.

It's about love, and allowing that love to express itself in you and through you. And it's all about love rising to the surface and changing your world.

Be joyful, your dreams are almost upon you.

Here is a simple exercise to get grounded.

Sit comfortably with your back straight. Imagine a tail growing out of the base of your spine and rooting into the center of the earth. Then imagine your consciousness as a bright ball of light in the middle of your head. Finally, immerse your body in a glowing ball of light, choosing whatever color you like.

Now once you are in this centered space ask your deeper mind to an answer to how to resolve any problem that you have. Your answer may come during this meditation session, or later, when you're involved in something else. The answer arises because you centered yourself and asked for directions from the depths of your own inner wisdom.

Selling More Effectively as a Trusted Sales Professional - Thirteen Tips

Do you want to sell more successfully using an honorable and straightforward approach? Read these thirteen sales tips to help you be perceived as a trusted sales professional by buyers. Incorporating these sales tips into your selling process will differentiate you from the rest and help you sell more successfully.

  • Attitude can be everything. It is important to remember that your attitudes drive all actions and these actions are perceived by buyers as trust-building or trust-breaking. The most important change you can make to sell more successfully is to adopt and reinforce attitudes that will lead to actions resulting in greater levels of trust. Conversely, it is just as important to "lose the attitudes" that result in actions that are trust-breaking.
  • Truly believe in the product or service and company for which you sell. This is a really difficult hurdle for most sellers who strongly believe in straightforward selling. If you don't believe your products or services will benefit your buyers, then you will constantly be in conflict with yourself during the sales process. If selling using a straightforward platform is truly important to you, it might be necessary for you to find another product or service you will better represent to truly be successful using this approach.
  • Intimately know the product or service and environment in which you sell. Do you need to be an expert? Maybe not. But it can only benefit your customer to know as much as possible so you can identify if your product or service can best meet their needs. A significant aspect of building trust with your buying counterparts is quickly establishing credibility. First and foremost, you should know much more about your products and services - as well as your competitors' products and services - than your prospects. Secondly, you should know your customers' organization and industry and the unique challenges and issues they face better than any of your competitors. Lastly, "I don't know" is a very appropriate answer when that is, indeed, the case. If you're new to a market, letting your potential customers know that up-front will help lower their expectations and make you feel more comfortable when giving "I don't know" as an answer. When you use this response, however, make sure you offer to find out the answer in a specified timeframe, and then be sure to keep that promise.
  • Live within your means. It's simple. Don't force yourself into a position where you "have to make the sale" or you lose something. For one, prospects don't like to feel like you are desperate for business. Secondly, if you want to sell using an honorable approach, it's important to reduce the risk/reward for a given sales situation. If you typically make only three to five sales per year and find yourself in serious debt, don't you think there's a definite likelihood that you might "stretch your value structure" a bit to make sure you win the sale so that your debt can be reduced?
  • Focus on helping the prospect rather than making the sale. If all you're thinking about is making the sale, this will be perceived negatively by your prospect through your actions. It doesn't mean you should never think about the sale, it simply means that you need to focus on the prospect's needs first and foremost.
  • View yourself as an advisor. This is a different mindset that may be foreign to a lot of salespeople. If you adopt the mindset that you're an advisor with the primary goal of identifying and fulfilling your potential customers needs, your attitudes and actions will be perceived very differently by your counterpart(s) than if your view yourself as a sales rep needing to "overcome the obstacles" and "close the sale."
  • Focus on the long-term. Admittedly, this is difficult. Most salespeople are used to the frequent calls from sales managers reminding them that "we've got to make our monthly or quarterly targets." If you can adopt this attitude, though, you will likely see higher sales, both short-term and long-term. Buyers hate to be "closed." If you take a short-term mentality, there's a high likelihood that buyers will perceive you as trying to close them - this is trust-breaking and your sales will likely suffer in the short AND long-term.
  • Some business is not worth pursuing. Most sales managers probably hate this one. It's important, though, to be realistic about each sales opportunity. You're not going to win every sale, so why work under the assumption that you will? Oftentimes, there are many early indicators that will lead you to believe that there's a low probability for making the sale. If that's the case, move on and spend your limited time and energy on opportunities where there's a higher probability for success.
  • Tell the prospect if your product or service will not meet their needs. Once you've had a reasonable opportunity to ask the appropriate questions, you must be willing to let the prospect know, as soon as possible, if your product or service will not meet their needs. This will result in a more efficient buy/sell process and save both you and the prospect valuable time that could be better spent elsewhere. The prospect will respect and probably trust you more for selling in this manner, and very well may purchase or recommend someone else to purchase from you in the future.
  • Ask questions, listen, and take notes. Entire books have been written on this subject. Prior to every prospect meeting, you should already have a list of at least one dozen questions to ask. The prospect's response to each of these questions should oftentimes be followed by one to three additional questions to drill down to the true issues and needs. Always take notes. This will show the prospect that you're truly listening. Also, send your typed notes to the prospect and ask them to review to ensure that you did indeed "get it right."
  • Follow the 80/20 Rule. When meeting with a potential buyer, you should try to talk 20% of the time and allow them to talk 80% of the time - a lot of salespeople and sales managers get this one confused.
  • Be direct. Answer buyer questions directly. Why do you think there is such a loss in the public's trust with politicians? How often do they provide a direct answer to a question? Rarely. Just because most politicians set a poor example, doesn't mean you should.
  • No "closing." One of the worst things you can do as a salesperson is to spend a lot of time and effort building trust with a prospect, only to destroy your "trust factor" towards the end of a complex sales process. No buyer likes to feel they're being manipulated or "closed." Make a recommendation, preferably with several options for the prospect to consider, and ask them to identify the next steps with a timeline. Tell them you'd really appreciate their business and ask what next steps you can take that will be helpful to them.

5 Top Tips for Maximizing Your Adsense Profits

1: The ideal Google AdSense page should have great content about a very specific topic. Take pains to be very clear about what the topic is, and carefully choose the keyword (or key phrase) describing the topic. Users don't like vague pages that don't make it very clear what the page is all about.

Don't even think about trying to 'trick' AdSense. (They have penalties, including getting kicked out.) Don't create a page on one topic and give it a file name about a different topic-that's too confusing.

In a nutshell, you want to make sure the page you create offers great value to people interested in the topic. When you provide excellent information on a specific topic, your visitors will benefit and will be more likely to click through to relevant AdWords.

2: Everyone's seen way too many horizontal banner ads up top. Thus, Google recommends you choose the vertical -- not horizontal -- format to display your AdWords. I agree. People have become "banner blind" to a horizontal format. Plus, Google has "trained" us to click on relevant text ads on their own site and they use the vertical format.

3: It's to your financial advantage to put the AdWords near the top of your page on the right. Make sure there is enough "breathing room" -- i.e. white space around the ads -- so that they will easily attract your visitors.

4: The latest marketing tests have revealed that placing pictures beside, or above you're a ads can have a massive impact on click-thru rates. This is because the eye is immediately attracted to the picture, once they see the picture, they see the ad!

5: I know it's tempting, because it seems so easy and it's just sitting there waiting for you to do it, but do not click on the AdWords displayed on your own site to increase your revenue. Google (rightfully) frowns on this.

Plus, Google has some of the smartest engineers around, and they are very good at detecting this kind of fraud. And really, for an extra $1, is it worth getting kicked out of a money-maker like AdSense? I think not?

Family Meals: When Dinner Schedules Dont Match

Mealtimes together deserve an important place in any family. Around the table, family members connect, children learn the art of conversation, and a spirit of peace and thankfulness can flourish.

But work, long commutes, sports, music and religious education can make for hectic evenings. As a result, it's sometimes impossible for the whole family to eat dinner together.

    A solution: Snacktime!

You don't have to resign yourself to family members' going their own way all evening. Once everyone is home, a family snack can be a simple and effective way to connect.

Make it easy on yourself. A bowl of popcorn or a store-bought treat works fine. Brownies or cookies quickly made from a mix fill the house with an inviting aroma. During cold weather, our family enjoys sweets with a pot of peppermint or raspberry tea.

Add a bit of structure to the conversation to make sure everyone is included and peace prevails. For example, you might ask each person to name the best thing that happened in their day. Everyone else around the table then responds with a comment and a follow-up question.

You can also ask gently whether anyone has a problem that could use your help. Save disciplinary matters for another time.

If snacktime isn't right for your family, you might enjoy a different strategy. Some families go for an evening walk, gather for prayer or share a read-aloud.

The key is to set aside an pleasant, peaceful time when family members can lovingly connect.

A sweet ending to a busy day.

Can You Always Trust Your Dentists Recommendations?

Can you always trust your dentists' recommendations? Think for yourself - in the last 30 years the health of our teeth has improved dramatically. We drink fluoridated water, which almost eliminated decay in our teeth.

We eat better, we brush and floss. Yet the amount of money we spend on dental care continues to rise. Could it be connected to the fact that the amount of dentists is increasing every year without any proportion to increases in population?

Let's face it - your dentist is in a business like everyone else. And since it is a very attractive business (the dentists' income is three to five times above the average), more and more students are graduating from dental schools every year.

What does it mean to your dentist? He has to face a very tough competition. He must pay his increasing costs (malpractice insurance, new materials, office maintenance) from an ever shrinking pool of potential patients. The only way he can do it is by raising income derived from each patient.

What does it mean to you? You are the one, who is asked to pay the price. As the marketing experts phrase it: "In order to stay in business, a dentist must offer bigger and better services". Translate it into regular language - the dentist must try to sell you more services regardless whether you need them or not.

The amount of money we spend on dental medical services is already insane and it grows every year. A dentist pays hundreds of thousands of dollars for his rising insurance costs, office maintenance, assistant and secretary salaries. If he makes less than $400,000 a year, he considers himself a failure.

There is a clear contradiction here. You want to spend as less as possible on your dental care, and your dentist will earn less if he does that.

Yes, I know. Your dentist is a decent person. He wouldn't do such things. I agree with you. But often there is no clear-cut solution (in most cases). I want to believe that most dentists are good. But why are their prices keep rising?

Check for yourself. How many seminars are on the Net promising to increase a dentist's profits. And what exactly do they preach? Selling you services, which you might not need.

Evaluate your dentist's recommendations using the same common sense, as you would apply to any other business proposition. Is it really necessary? Is there some other alternative treatment, which may achieve the same result?

With the amount of information available today on the Internet you can educate yourself in the new and not so new techniques used for the dental care. You might be able to save a lot of money that way. And yes, by educating yourself you can have better teeth.

    What is an Unsecured Loan?

An unsecured loan is a personal loan where the lender has no claim on a homeowner's property should they fail to repay. Instead, the lender is relying solely on the ability of a borrower to meet their loan borrowing repayments.

The amount you are able to borrow can start from as little as ?500 and go up to ?25,000. Because you not securing the money you are borrowing, lenders tend to limit the value of unsecured loans to ?25,000. The repayment period will range from anywhere between six months and ten years. Unsecured loans are offered by traditional financial institutions like building societies and banks but also recently by the larger supermarkets chains.

An unsecured loan can be used for almost anything - a luxury holiday, a new car, a wedding, or home improvements.

An unsecured loan is good for people who are not homeowners and cannot obtain a secured loan for example; a tenant living in rented accommodation. There are a few things to consider before applying for an unsecured loan: Unsecured loans are invariably more expensive than secured loans, and the repayment periods demanded by lenders are shorter too. This is because they have no guarantee that you can repay the loan, and therefore charge you more in interest to cover the cost of insurance policies that they need to take out to protect them should you default on repayments. In the event that a borrower does not pay up, the lender will invoke the terms of the legally-binding credit agreement and pursue the borrower through the legal system.

Lenders are obliged by law to tell you how much they charge for this type of finance and this is worked out as an annual percentage rate (APR). Ask whether the APR figure quoted is 'typical' or is what every applicant is charged. You should also investigate whether the interest rate charged is fixed for the lifetime of the loan repayment period, or whether it varies with the base rate. Check too on whether there are early repayment penalties.

Unsecured loans vary from lender to lender, so it pays to shop around before making a final decision.

Are You The Master Of Your Destiny?

    How strong are you?

I'm not asking if you can carry 150 lbs. of weight. What I'm
after is your strength of character. How resilient are you to
hang on to your dreams amidst the raging forces of discouragement
    and criticisms?

There are far too many individuals who never get to experience
the joy of attaining their desires because other people's
influence has significantly (and sometimes negatively) affected
    their crucial decisions.

Are there instances in your life when other people said that
you should not continue your plans because they're never gonna
work? What did you do? Did you continue your endeavors or did
    you just follow their command?

If you always adhere to other's beliefs and opinions even though
they are contrary to yours, you're just torturing yourself. It's
like you don't have a mind of your own. You're like a shadow
following the moves of someone else.

You may listen to other people's advices, but never let them
control you. If their advices would contribute to your
success and well being, then by all means follow them. But
if they would hinder you and stray you away from what you
really want in life, then you've got to make a stand and
    pursue your heart's aspirations.

Sure there would be criticisms. But if you always avoid
them, then you will never be truly happy.

As one famous person said, "There is a sure way to avoid
criticisms, be nothing and do nothing. This remedy never
    fails." True enough.

    Take my case.

When I was in first year college, my dad wanted me to shift
my course to Physical Therapy because it was in demand in the
United States at that time. But I wanted to continue my
studies in Accountancy. I remained firm with my decision
and after some negotiations they finally gave in.

Then there's my love life. Chinese tradition states that
Chinese people marry their own kind. (No offense) But I fell
madly in love with this Filipino girl. Despite all the
criticisms, discouragement, and harsh words (pardon me), I
defended my love for her. Right now we're going strong and
my relatives have respected my decision.

You see, if I have given up easily in any of the two scenarios,
I would've deprived myself of joy and contentment in my life.

Sometimes other people's words would cut like a knife. But
never be disheartened. Listen to the voice inside of you.
We will never be able to satisfy everybody because each of
us is unique. We have our own distinct traits and values.
Respect for each other's opinions should be upheld.

With that said, I would like to leave this final message that
sums it all up. Follow your heart and happiness will follow.

Credit Help for Real Estate Financing: Five Categories of Your Credit Score

    1. Payment History -- 35%

The number of accounts paid as agreed and a good payment history give you a higher score.

Negative points lower credit scores because of 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days late on any debt. The dollar amount of these delinquencies also impacts credit scores. Severity of delinquency, how long past due, and number of delinquencies are nasty remarks on some credit reports. The older these derogatory items are, the less impact they have on credit scores. You do not want any present delinquent accounts when applying for a real estate loan.

Never, ever pay a mortgage payment more than 30 days late. Lenders do not like to see any delinquencies on real estate loans.

Adverse public records, such as bankruptcy, judgments, suits, liens, and wage attachments negatively dominate credit history. Any of these items cleared up helps improve a credit score, unless the item is aged. The older the derogatory entry, the less the impact. Any activity on a particular item makes the item update and therefore, remain on the report for another seven years. So, if a derogatory item is more than four or five years old, don't bother with it.

Collection items unfavorably shape credit payment history. The more age a collection account has, the less its consequence. Most mortgage companies require that collection accounts be cleared before lending. If this is your problem, see "Help with Collections" later in section six.

    2. Proportional Amounts Owed -- 30%

The amount owed on a credit line compared to the available credit is termed the proportional amount owed. With a credit card limit of $5,000, the score will be higher if less than $2,500 is owed. Even better is to owe less than 1/3rd of the available credit or less than $1501. To have the highest proportional amounts owed scoring factor, owing less than ten percent of the available balance gives you the best possible rating. On the other hand, owing over $4,500 on an account with a limit of $5,000 lowers your score significantly, especially if you have too many credit cards and other loans with high balances compared to available balances.

Tip: Call your creditor and ask them to raise your available credit as long as you don't use this credit. This raises your proportional amount owed scoring factor.

To raise your credit score dramatically and quickly, pay down as much as possible on each credit line instead of paying off one credit card at a time. If a credit card is totally paid off, it does not compute in the proportional amount owed; therefore your rating does not benefit from paying balances in full. On the contrary, paying balances in full takes the account out of the equation and you don't get higher points for the low proportional amount owed.

    3. Length of Credit History -- 15%

Any account over twelve months with a good payment history helps a credit score if the balance is not too high compared to the available credit. Six months is the minimum length of time to establish credit. The time since accounts opened and the time since account activity are factored into the length of credit history.

    4. New Credit -- 10%

Whenever you apply for a new credit line, your score receives a negative hit. The more inquiries you generate, the lower your score. Obtaining new credit lowers your credit score. We only apply for credit when applying for mortgages. Every time we get a new mortgage, our credit scores go down.

Never finance a new car or get a new line of credit when you are getting ready to finance property. Wait until after closing to apply for further financing. Be aware that after your new loan shows up on your credit report, your financing abilities shrink. If you need credit funds for any reason, including renovation costs for your new house, apply for this after closing your property purchase.

    5. Types of Credit Used -- 10%

The different types of loans taken out by consumers affect credit scores. Credit assessors view mortgage accounts more favorably than consumer finance accounts. Too many installment loans, auto loans, and department store credit cards affect credit negatively. To improve your credit score, pay off installment loans and consumer finance company accounts after you have lowered your proportional amounts owed. Then pay off your department store retail accounts. Keep balances as low as possible on home equity lines of credit because they often count as consumer finance accounts instead of mortgages. Achieve higher credit scores by having only mortgage accounts and a couple of major credit cards with low balances.

Note: In addition to credit scores, lenders consider length of time at residence and employment as well as income and education.

Do You Need a Credit Score of 700?

Don't believe it! We have so many loans; our scores are in the mid 600s, but we buy and sell property all the time. Even with a perfect payment history, we can't get our scores up because we have so many real estate loans with high balances remaining. We often need to get "B" loans instead of "A" loans, which means we pay higher tax-deductible interest, points, and fees.
